Five Roles of a Mentor
Blog: 20th February 2023
At a recent workshop, several people attributed their current success to a mentor or boss earlier in their career.
We drilled down to specifically identify what occurred in these relationships and we uncovered many roles were being conducted.
These roles included:
🔍Advisor
– leveraging their career, industry expertise and relationship building tactics to navigate the tricky decisions and situations being faced
😀Cheerleader
– there on the sidelines, promoting and encouraging you to back yourself and your judgment
⚠️Connector
– not only ‘joining the dots’ in the volume of information to deal with, but they ‘connect the people’ to know in and outside of the organisation
👿Devil’s advocate
– these deep trusting relationships give permission to channel feedback you need to hear to grow, change and adapt to provoke the right conversations at the right time
🌂Guide
– their torch shines a light on the path previously trodden enabling a less troublesome journey.
Imagine if your leadership is being described as a mentor and being credited for a person’s success.
Mentors often do the heavy lifting in relationships and are often volunteering their time, energy, and headspace to support you and your team.
Together with Jenny Wilkins, we focus on creating great mentors using our Mentoring Advantage Program (MAP) in an endeavour to make your people successful in their careers.
