When Words Are Not Enough
In 1999 I found myself in trouble in Thailand.
I was facilitating a series of short leadership sessions in hospitals and I quickly discovered that the nurse’s and doctor’s understanding of English was as good as my understanding of Thai!
Fortunately, I had packed my decks of CCS Vision Cards which I recently discovered while working at the NAB.
These decks of cards enabled me to work with an interpreter to run these sessions – they encouraged participation, communication and proved to be a great relationship building tool.
By asking and framing questions that encouraged the group to search for an image on a card that helped elicit responses, the group worked closely together to arrive at the answers they were seeking to improve their communication between these two important roles, nurses and doctors.
They shared information freely, very quickly. They were thinking of their lived experiences using pictures.
The mind never thinks without a mental picture. (Aristotle)
As a leader, you’re continually facilitating, coaching and mentoring through conversation.
Acquiring tools to broaden your repertoire to influence and inspire these people to follow your lead in the conversation is a worthwhile investment in your leadership.
Yesterday, I received a new user manual and two new decks of cards. Creator, Leonie Cutts and I are having a conversation about these cards and my book Talk Like A Leader on her monthly Unpacked Zoom session – and you’re invited to attend.
