TRUST is more important than ever.
This remark made by Tom Peters (In Search of Excellence) was 20 years ago about today’s book.
And, I think he’s right … right now in 2020 – we do need more TRUST … more than ever.
This is a classic business book.
The Trusted Advisor’s authors David Maister, Charles Green & Robert Galford examined & explored what it takes to be trusted Advisor and I’d suggest trusted Consultant.
Whilst it’s been useful for me, I’ve gleaned the gems today’s leaders who need to give more TRUST or become more TRUSTWORTHY.
Firstly, some TRUST characteristics:
It grows rather than just appears
It’s rational & emotional
It’s a two-way relationship
It’s different for both parties in the relationship
It’s personal
And I like this simple trust building process:
ENGAGE – to be interested & concerned
LISTEN – to understand & to empathise
FRAME – courageously articulated issues & opportunities
ENVISION – together to design possibilities
COMMIT – to what it will take to do work
Throughout The Trusted Advisor, TRUST showed up looking like:
· Consistent behaviour
· Conversations which are remembered
· Context - putting issues at ease through stories of experience
· Comfort & calmness when there is chaos
· Challenged assumptions which we have about ourselves
· Corrections rather than criticisms
· Candour
And some parting advice:
· Think more of others than yourself
· Say what you mean
· Be curious & keep asking
· Get rid of distractions while listening
In your endeavour to be an effective leader, strive to move from being unpredictable to being predictable so that people TRUST you (even more).
