Book Review - Thrive - The Reading Room

Define Success

In your own terms

Given your 2020 has been a new way of living, has your illusion of success changed?

Is it beyond money & power?

I believe that to THRIVE, is an aspiration at the moment.

To THRIVE, is the new success.

Written in 2014, Arianna Huffington shared her reasoning & recipe to THRIVE, and in 2020, we need to read this, more than any other book.

Entrenched in Greek ancestry, personal stories, and current research, the vibe of the book is uplifting with an authentic desire to push us to strive to THRIVE.

And THRIVING is about WELL-BEING.

Whether this is about you as a person, parent, or partner in a company, there’s enough reasoning shared in this book and surrounding us at the moment, to demonstrate why you should invest in ‘WELL-BEING’.

This is evident where I live; the wearing of masks is mandatory; people value their health & the well-being of others.

Simply summarised, we can all practise these three actions to be successful, above all else in life:

1.       More rest – go to bed 30 min earlier, invest in your sleep

2.       Move your body – walk, yoga, dance, make it a priority over sitting & watching Netflix

3.       Meditate – start with just 5 min and build it up, get connected to your breathing

In addition to WELL-BEING, THRIVE explores the value & benefit of WISDOM, WONDER & GIVING.

These four areas form the Third Metric – the recipe of success beyond money & power.

WISDOM – let go of what’s not serving you, show gratitude often and move from the device trap – turn them off and don’t let them be the first & last things you look at.

WONDER – let go of the judgment you have on yourself, select images to escape to look at what you love, and learn to appreciate your breathing

GIVING – be more kind, give more of yourself to others (for free) & smile at people you don’t know!

Read THRIVE – let it reset, recharge and rejuvenate you for a successful life.

And there’s more:

Well-being

1.       Let go of what’s not serving you well – whatever is draining your energy

2.       Gratitude sharing – create a list of what you’re grateful for and share it with two friends (who do the same with you

3.       Device trap – turn of your devices, leave them out of your bedroom and hen you wake, don’t look at them first

Wonder

1.       Breath – 10 seconds on concentrating on the rise & fall of your breathing – block everything else out of your thoughts to become more present.

2.       Select an image which you love to look at e.g. your pet, child, holiday, and let it expand our wonder

3.       Forgive yourself for the judgment you have on yourself (and others) – focus more on the day ahead to wonder what joy it will bring.

Giving

1.       Be kind and practice small giving gestures

2.       Connect more with people you generally don’t … say hello or smile

3.       Be a go-giver (rather than a go-getter) share your talents with others e.g. cooking, accounting
