What will you learn today?

I listened to a great webinar yesterday (while I ate my lunch, made Banana Bread and took notes!) My goal is to participate in a webinar every fortnight – for two reasons: to keep my knowledge current and to learn how to use the medium (I’m about to host my first webinar at the end of the month.)

The amazing Elliott Masie spoke about Social & Collaborative Learning aka ‘Learning Together’. Thanks to AITD, Citrix and Gotowebinars, we had sixty minutes of discussion regarding learning in our workplaces. Whilst there were some great pearls of wisdom, ideas and reminders, what struck me was how this great medium is underutilised in workplaces. It is so easy to connect people via a screen – share some learning which can be immediately implemented at the work site.

Now, the one great reminder that Elliott shared was about the need to be conscious of the quiet people in our learning audience (read that as ‘in your team’). As a leader (as a learning designer) you have to be cognisant of Introverts – those who don’t need the hype associate with team building activities and even the style of the open space workplaces. I won’t rant on, but do go to Susan Cain’s site, read her book ‘Quiet’ or watch her super TED TALK.

So, what will you learn today? Will you watch the TED TALK? Will you find a webinar to participate in or will you explore the web to find a MOOC to participate in? There are options but you need to make a decision and do it. And, for those people leaders reading this, please encourage your team to explore the learning opportunities that are fingertips away!
